Toxicology of Young Shoots of Common Bamboos (Bambusa Arundinacea Willd)

چکیده
season they begin to come out from the roots of mature bamboos and then become available in the vegetable stalls in the bazar. They are taken by all classes of people and have lately become popular even among the European residents in Calcutta. Cattle are also fond of these shoots and the owners of bamboo clumps always try to protect the young shoots by fencing off the clumps during the rains when bamboos begin to sprout. The shoots are always found covered with coriaceous, sheaths which fall off when they grow larger and maturer. They are soft and edible when they are about 20 to 25 inches in height. Fatal cases of cattle poisoning by bamboo shoots are of frequent occurrence in Bengal as the village people know well to their cost. Cases of human poisoning are also known to the toxicologists of this country, but the' actual poison which causes symptoms of poisoning or death has not yet been traced and there is much speculation about its chemical nature. The fact that the shoots are cooked by boiling in plenty of water accounts for the rareness of poisoning in

Effect of bamboo shoot, Bambusa arundinacea (Retz.) Willd. on thyroid status under conditions of varying iodine intake in rats.
Young shoots or sprouts of common bamboos are used as food in third world countries. Evidences suggest the presence of cyanogenic glucoside like anti-thyroidal substance in bamboo shoots (BS) but effect of prolonged BS consumption on thyroid status under conditions of varying iodine nutriture remains unexplored. The study was undertaken to evaluate goitrogenic content, in vitro anti thyroid per...
متن کاملCharacterization of microsatellites in Bambusa arundinacea and cross species amplification in other bamboos.
Microsatellites, tandem repeats of short nucleotide (1-6 bp) sequences, are the DNA marker of choice because of their highly polymorphic, ubiquitous distribution within genome, ease of genotyping through polymerase chain reaction (PCR), selectively neutral, co-dominant and multi allelic nature. Six microsatellites, three polymorphic and three monomorphic, have been characterized for the first t...
متن کاملDynamic allocation and transfer of non-structural carbohydrates, a possible mechanism for the explosive growth of Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys heterocycla)
Moso bamboo can rapidly complete its growth in both height and diameter within only 35-40 days after shoot emergence. However, the underlying mechanism for this "explosive growth" remains poorly understood. We investigated the dynamics of non-structural carbohydrates (NSCs) in shoots and attached mature bamboos over a 20-month period. The results showed that Moso bamboos rapidly completed their...
